UK singer/songwriter Ny recently released her debut album Who Is She giving fans a collective of diverse sounds from dance, R&B, and soul to a bit of grimey dubstep. Ny’s album takes you on an emotional journey with tracks like “Dark Side” a piano driven ballad allowing a window into Ny’s soul, to tracks like “Crazy Love” with an edgy dubstep sound, and one of my personal favorites in which the title speaks for itself, “Music.“ Overall, this record has fresh sounds for every mood. In our recent interview, Ny gives an even closer look into her soul by sharing her background story, what dreams she has as an artist, more on the album debut, and of course her love for the fans.
For those who aren’t familiar with who Ny is, can you share a little of your story?
My parents were big vinyl collectors so there was always lots of music at home; ESP roots, reggae, and soul. I loved Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, Lauryn Hill, and Alicia Keys. I would always practise.
I did talent shows in my local area of Camden at the age of 12. By age 14 I was recording and writing in friends bedroom studios and doing jingles for pirate radio.
I started writing as a way of self-therapy and escapism from sharing a small room with my 3 sisters, my friend being murdered, and a financially poor upbringing. “The First Lady of Grime” title came about as I was the first female to do a mixtape Split Endz, which was mainly grime based with other elements. I ended up selling it in central London for £5, and stalked the Dj’s until they played my first track “Fire.” I Followed it up with Split Endz Volume 2, which featured Wiley, JME, Plan B, Professor Green, Sweetie Irie, Sincere, and others.
I featured on Tinchy and Sways first albums, and travelled with Dj’s Count and Sinden, performing throughout Europe and the states. Sung at Glastonbury as well. Did a funky house track produced by Wookie and a lot of gigs in clubs. Supported N-Dubz on their arena tour last year, and this year supported Plan B on his forest tour around the UK. I also played at wireless festival, toured UK schools, and wrote my first album Who Is She.
Talk about your debut album ‘Who Is She‘….
‘Who is she‘ is my heart in music form. I always write truth and it has elements of soul, dance, dubstep and r&b; it is British.
Which tracks on the album are most personal to you and why?
“Dark side” I wrote in my front room, in a very dark and lonely time…it’s a peep into my soul. Then I woke up and wrote about being in a relationship that feels perfect, almost dream like, until you wake up and realise it’s nothing like what you chose to see it as.
What are your dreams as an artist?
To inspire, uplift, empathise through my music. To perform across the world. I want to be a legend!
Any shout-outs you’d like to give?
Love to my fans, they make my dreams real.
